CCAE Director Profile - John Alho
Associate Vice-President, Government and Community Engagement
University of Calgary
John Alho entered the PSE advancement profession almost by accident. “I was working as a political staffer in Ottawa responsible, among other things, for file management, stakeholder engagement and communications,” says John. “ I was interested in working in the field of government relations and/or communications. When the opportunity to join the University of Manitoba as its first Director of Government Relations presented itself, I eagerly jumped at it.”
John served in that capacity for 2 years before being promoted to Associate Vice-President (External) with additional responsibilities for community relations, marketing, communications, media and issues management. As AVPE, he has also worked in alumni engagement and philanthropy, and was responsible for talent management and change management initiatives in External Relations.
After almost 10 years, in early 2013, John left the University of Manitoba for a new position as Associate Vice-President (Government and Community Engagement) at the University of Calgary. He is in the process of developing a strategic government relations strategy and a robust institutional community engagement plan. He also oversees the University Senate Office.
Says John Alho of CCAE:
“The professional development opportunities offered by CCAE have provided me with a good knowledge base of all the functional areas in external relations and advancement. I’ve particularly enjoyed sharing experiences and learning best practices from colleagues across the country.
CCAE is an outstanding organization with a strong reputation for providing leadership in advancement. During my term on the Board, I hope to see an increase in the value proposition CCAE offers its members – more services, better experiences, more opportunities for growth. ”
