Biographical notes on the recipients of the 2007 TD Meloche Monnex Fellowships in Advancement

Kelly Burke
Lethbridge College

Kelly Burke, a 2007 graduate of the Lethbridge College Communication Arts — Advertising
and Public Relations program, is eager to put her knowledge and passion to
work in the school’s Advancement Department.
During her two years at Lethbridge College, Kelly balanced work, school and
volunteer opportunities while maintaining honours status. Her public relations and
media communications work with Citizens for Safe Passageway — a community organization lobbying Lethbridge City Council — her role as Advertising Manager for the
College newspaper The Endeavour, and her experience in sales and marketing, have
advanced her skills in communication, research, plan development and execution,
leadership and task organization.
Kelly spent a year as an exchange student in The Netherlands, an experience that
gave her an expanded view of the world and an appreciation for her role in the global
community. A former University of Lethbridge student and a graduate of Lethbridge
College, Kelly has developed a passion for learning, working and excelling in a career
in institutional advancement.
Lethbridge College will benefit from Kelly’s role as a TD Meloche Monnex Fellow
during an exciting time of change and celebration. Lethbridge College is in the
process of re‑branding and creating a new vision and mandate in correlation with its
50th anniversary; Kelly will play an integral role in communications with students,
alumni, donors and key stakeholders during this time.
Kelly will work with marketing and communications professionals on the rebranding
advisory committee, and also with the Alumni Association, identifying key
alumni groups, tracking their involvement with the College and reconnecting alumni
with the school. She will assist in the planning and execution of many 50th‑anniversary
special events throughout the year; specifically, individual program reunions and
Homecoming in May 2008.
Lethbridge College and Kelly Burke will benefit immensely from this opportunity
to bring a promising advancement professional to even greater heights of experience
and skill, thanks to the awarding of a TD Meloche Monnex Fellowship for 2007–08.

Julie Forest
Université de Moncton

Julie Forest, a graduating Master’s degree student in Guidance at the Université de
Moncton, also holds a Bachelor of Arts in Family Studies from the same institution.
During the past year, Julie took over the coordination of a career mentoring program
that enables students to meet an alumnus or alumna working in the student’s own
chosen career field. This project not only allowed Julie to employ her skills as a guidance
counselor, but also to develop links with graduates who become mentors.
Recognized by her colleagues for her creativity and initiative, Julie always has her
next project in mind. Whether as a student, professional or mother, she finds time to
become involved in the community. Julie served as Coordinator of the annual colloquium
for the Association of Francophone Guidance Counselors of New Brunswick
in 2003 and 2005, and was also Treasurer and Webmaster for the association. She
is currently the student representative on the Board of the Université de Moncton’s
day-care centre, and holds conferences and training sessions in various community
agencies in the region.
As a TD Meloche Monnex Fellow, Julie will continue to manage the career
mentoring program. She will also play important roles in the Bulletin for alumni and
friends of U de M, and in publicity and special events for donors to the university.
Says Julie : «Whether at the academic or professional level, I have now been involved
with the Université de Moncton for 15 years, and I feel at home here. Thanks
to my academic experiences and my professors throughout the years, I have developed
a thirst for knowledge and a desire to work in university advancement. I am
very proud of the education I’ve received and I hope to transmit that pride to future
generations.»

Amanda MacPherson
Cape Breton University

Amanda Rae MacPherson, a native of Sydney, Nova Scotia, will graduate in
October 2007 from Mount Saint Vincent with a Bachelor of Public Relations degree
and a certificate in marketing. Throughout her high school years, Amanda - a committed
student and community volunteer - worked with the Nova Scotia Department
of Family Services, providing tutoring to the youth of Glace Bay. She plans to pursue
her interest in education, particularly in Cape Breton, through her career.
Amanda’s four-year degree gave her the opportunity to participate in the cooperative
education program. She completed two workplace terms with Cape Breton
University’s Development Department, carrying out a range of duties in student recruitment, alumni relations, fundraising and communications. Amanda demonstrated
her wide-ranging abilities when she planned the CAPER women’s soccer team’s trip
to New England and skillfully managed media relations for the team. In fall 2006,
Amanda played an integral role in planning and implementing CBU’s two-monthlong
celebration of Culture and Community.
Most recently, Amanda has been recognized for her abilities by becoming one of
18 students from across Canada to attend the London Seminar in International Public
Relations in London, England. This seminar offers Amanda the opportunity not
only to experience living in one of the world’s most cosmopolitan cities, but also to
interact with, and learn from, public relations and advertising practitioners involved
in international communications work.
As a TD Meloche Monnex Fellow, Amanda MacPherson will work on the
biannual Distinction magazine, create solicitation materials for the launch of a capital
campaign, coordinate a new high-school student recruitment event and the international
recruitment tour, and help plan the Alumni Annual Progress Dinner.
