This one-day workshop will help professionals from every advancement area to understand, weigh and manage the diverse risks and ethical issues inherent in our work today. Privacy Legislation Across Canada: Impacts on Advancement

The upcoming Not for Profit Act and recent changes to privacy regulations are of concern to all advancement offices. Scott Lamb will open the Pacific Region Workshop with an incisive overview of the privacy legislation in Canada, both Federal and Provincial. He will provide a precise baseline of information about the legislation and its impacts, particularly on advancement work. Ample time will follow for questions and discussion.

How to Maximize the Power of Events and Minimize Risks

Advancement events help us cultivate, steward, celebrate and educate our schools’ many constituents. Jen Bendl, an experienced event coordinator and manager , will lead us through the power of events to build brand and enhance school reputation. She will help us navigate issues of liability, accountability and media interest, as well as how to manage campus disruptions (protests, strikes, and the like) in ways that protect reputation and key relationships.

The Promise and Perils of Social Media

Should we tag our alumni and students in those Facebook photos from the latest Reunion? Advancement shops have all been plunged head-long into the cyber-world, and we are learning every day how to leverage new tools connecting us to stakeholders – especially younger generations. Social media and student recruitment expert Michael Boronowski will detail how advancement professionals should be preparing for, assessing and mitigating risk exposure while using social media.

 

Michael will explore risk management in terms of distributed access and ownership of social media, as well as development of related policies and guidelines. He will provide tips on developing basic social media literacy and capacity in all areas of advancement, plus how to review and refine strategies to align with changing needs and emerging tools.

 

 

 

2:30 – 3:00 p.m. 

 

CCAE Executive Director, Mark Hazlett, will offer a brief update on CCAE’s activities, member services, research and professional development. Delegates will be invited to share their key “take-aways” from the Pacific Region Workshop sessions.
