OPENING SESSION

Advancement 101

John Bergholz, VP Advancement, University of Windsor

This session will cover the fundamentals of Advancement work upon which all external relations are built. We will examine approaches to alumni engagement, solicitation, cultivation and messaging. Our "Yank" colleague promises that his will be a foundational approach to how all elements of the Advancement Office can work together. But this will not be all theory. Instead, we will examine real-world case studies of major gift work (which depends on all units working together), as well as a recent case study of a bold new alumni event centered around the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics. This involved all elements of the Adancement Office for the University of Windsor, just as the games brought Canadians (and the world) together. The "Eagle" who landed in Windsor, and who conceived and executed the event, will tell you how Windsor went for the gold.

In particular, the session will focus on how you, as an advancement professional, can contribute to and benefit from a positive culture in which the advancement disciplines work together as a highly-functioning team.

CLOSING SESSION

Career Make or Break – Ethics in Advancement

Innes van Nostrand, Vice Principal, Upper Canada College

This session will include a review of ethical principles and tools, but will focus mostly on road-testing your own ethics with a variety of case studies relating to educational advancement. The discussions will revolve around situations where grey areas of conflicting "rights" challenge us personally and professionally. Getting these situations correct often goes unnoticed, but getting them wrong can be reputationally catastrophic. Be ready to test your own ethical compass.
