Another Grad Send Off – Now What?
Facilitator: Cyndi Cave, Coordinator, Alumni Programs & Services, Mount Royal University
Mount Royal University’s Alumni Relations Office will offer a brief overview of the steps they have taken to build affinity with MRU students before graduation. This session will describe two of those initiatives, including the Future Alumni Network (FAN Club) and annual Grad Send Off event, and share the issues and learning that have come from those programs. Following the presentation, Mount Royal will facilitate a discussion on the challenges of engaging alumni - particularly new alumni - and encourage the group to share ideas and come up with concrete solutions they can use at their own schools.
Building the CCAE Brand
Facilitator: Janet Sailian, Communications & Marketing Consultant
How can your association – CCAE – modernize, refine and build its brand as the professional association for Canadian advancement staff? A quick overview of CCAE’s new strategic plan and visual branding options will lead into discussion of marketing both change and continuity in the era of Web 2.0. Share lessons from your own marketing and branding initiatives, help choose the new CCAE logo, and provide input on what you would like to see and hear from CCAE in the year ahead.
Official and Unofficial Channels in Social Media; Leveraging Goodwill and Mitigating Risks
Facilitator: Joel Friesen, University of Victoria
Unofficial voices in the social media scene are talking about your institution. You can identify channels where both unofficial and official voices discuss your institution. Learn to cultivate and appreciate both the good and the bad, and how to value unofficial channels while not drowning out the official voice. Create a plan to mitigate risks while encouraging free speech and open dialogue. Leveraging these freely given voices can be your strongest ally in reaching your widest range of audiences.
From PR to Fundraising: What Public Relations Practitioners Must Know to Make the Transition a Happy - and Prosperous - One
Facilitator: Michael Robb, Director of Development, Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine, University of Alberta
Michael Robb spent nearly two decades in media relations, writing, editing, publishing and communications planning at the University of Alberta, primarily in the Faculty of Medicine. He then joined the University's fundraising team. Michael will lead a discussion about the pitfalls and joys of making that transition, including the cultural differences between PR and fundraising (e.g., confidentiality issues versus telling the world); financial and administrative process differences; using a strong institutional knowledge base to augment development work; measuring success in terms of dollars versus front-page hits; establishing long-term relationships; salary/contractual differences; and seeing philanthropy in a different context.
Young Alumni Programs: A Conversation on Best Practices
Facilitators: Andrea Eccleston, Alumni Relations Officer, University of Saskatchewan; Darran Fernandez, Alumni Relations Officer, University of British Columbia; Christina Fox, Student & Young Alumni Outreach Officer, University of Western Ontario; Linda Nicoll, Manager, Student and Alumni Programs, University of Victoria; Anjela Wilson, Alumni Relations Officer, Ryerson Polytechnic University
Alumni professionals share ideas and pitfalls on young alumni programs, from innovative programming to using the latest social media technology to communicate with and engage this growing alumni population. Participants will connect with alumni colleagues who are in the midst of building a young alumni program, learn from others who currently manage a successful one, and with the help of other participants, solve their young-alumni engagement challenges.

Asking the Right Questions: Inclination and Capacity
Facilitator: Lisa Woodcock, Associate Director: Annual Fund, Alumni Affairs and Development, University of Guelph
Assessments, Qualifications, Discoveries – they’re all the same thing and can be done by just about anyone who speaks to your alumni. Arm your team with the right strategic questions to determine whether an alumnus has the inclination and capacity to make a gift to your institution.
Effective Donor Acknowledgement
Facilitator: Ashleigh Manktelow, Donor Engagement and Stewardship, McGill University
The process of acknowledging donors for their gifts is often complex and lengthy. Many systems rely on using mass-produced template letters that do little to speak to our donors in a meaningful way. This roundtable will explore strategies in donor segmentation and acknowledgment vehicles, as well as new and fresh ways to structure our “thank-yous”, to break through the clutter and truly reach our donors. Samples will be provided.
Alumni Events: How Important is the Stake your Stakeholders Hold?
Facilitators: Liz King, Senior Alumni Relations Manager – Events, University of British Columbia; Christina Harley, Senior Alumni Relations Manager – Programs, University of British Columbia
This session will discuss the importance of connecting with and including stakeholders in planning successful alumni events – from engaging alumni volunteers and internal colleagues (including Development colleagues), to campus stakeholders (e.g., Parking Office, Bookstore), internal and external media, and non-academic constituents (e.g., Athletics departments).
Localization, Internationalization, Regionalization and Globalization—What Does All This Mean?
Facilitator: Ryan Rodrigues, Associate Director, Alumni Outreach, University of Western Ontario
Our institutions are increasingly being affected by our shrinking world. Students come to us from around the globe, and our graduates are more mobile and receptive to career opportunities outside of Canada. Localization, internationalization, regionalization and globalization have become key factors shaping higher education strategy at every level of the institution; from recruitment, study–abroad programs and research, to alumni relations and development. In this discussion, we will tackle the wide range of innovative international initiatives and partnerships available to advancement shops in Canada. Any institution aspiring to international recognition and stature must exhibit an international perspective and global commitment. Join us to discuss how our international alumni can help make this a reality.
