Alumni Affairs and Development (AA&D) exists to advance the mission
of the University of Guelph by raising private support and building
relationships with internal and external constituencies. The division’s
mission is to promote and increase involvement and support for the
University in its many endeavors by building and enhancing
relationships with alumni, faculty, staff, students, parents, friends,
corporations, foundations and associations. AA&D’s vision is to
champion the University and its mission and to be instrumental to the
University’s realization of its full potential in teaching, research
and innovation. Anticipating the launch of the University’s next major
campaign to capitalize on the University’s 50th anniversary in 2014,
the leadership team in Alumni Affairs and Development has implemented a
series of strategic planning initiatives, designed to build capacity
and enhance fundraising results. Reporting to the Executive Director,
Life & Physical Sciences in Alumni Affairs & Development, and
in consultation with the Deans of the Ontario Agricultural College
(OAC), the Senior Development Manager is responsible for all OAC
fundraising activities.
All aspects of the OAC major gift program (philanthropic gifts of
$25,000 or greater) are the exclusive responsibility of the Senior
Development Manager. Responsibilities include identification,
cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of donors and potential
donors, as well as preparation of the case for support, project
descriptions, proposals, briefing materials and gift agreements. He/she
manages all meetings and communications with college prospects,
including those with senior university officials such as the President,
Vice-Presidents, Associate Vice-Presidents or the Dean, and is
responsible for all follow-up, including securing the major gift.
He/she is also responsible for the management of volunteers to support
college fundraising initiatives, including recruitment, training,
support and recognition. The Senior Development Manager is expected to
generate at least $3 million in new major gifts and pledges annually.
The Senior Development Manager is also responsible for planned giving
in support of college fundraising priorities; donor stewardship
strategies for college donors of major and/or planned; as well as
supporting alumni advancement and annual fund initiatives. As a member
of the AA&D management team, the Senior Development Manager
contributes to strategic planning for University advancement
initiatives. He/she develops and implements a long-term fundraising
strategy for OAC aligned with the overall AA&D multi-year and
annual strategic plans, and works with other members of the team as
appropriate to implement the various projects and initiatives reflected
in the strategic plan.
Requirements of the position include: an undergraduate degree, combined
with a minimum five years’ progressive experience in fundraising,
preferably in an educational setting, or an equivalent combination of
education and experience. CFRE designation is preferred. Also required
are superior communication skills, both oral and written; proven
management experience, including budget analysis and planning;
demonstrated supervisory experience; a track record of success in
securing donations through a variety of methods; and a strong record of
volunteer management. The successful candidate must have a general
knowledge of the business community and a proven ability to interact
effectively with senior executives. Also required are excellent skills
with standard office and presentation software.
