2005 Winners

CCAE’s 2005 Rising Stars were honoured on May 29, 2005 at the Opening Ceremonies of the CCAE national conference at The Banff Centre. Proudly displaying their Rising Star citations – each accompanied by a $2,000 President’s Scholarship – are (left to right) Kristine Hamlyn, Memorial University of Newfoundland; Bridget McMahon, Wilfrid Laurier University; and Hélène Véronneau, Université de Montréal.

Kristine Hamlyn
Communications Coordinator, Student Recruitment, Memorial University of Newfoundland

Kristine Hamlyn has, within three years, brought to Memorial University remarkable results in student recruitment, publications design, media relations and television advertising. Her skills in marketing and her uncompromising attention to detail have enhanced Memorial’s international and regional student recruitment, brought to its publications a new coherence and consistency, and secured positive media coverage for the university.

With her position cross-appointed to both the Office of Student Recruitment and the Division of University Relations, Kristine plans and carries out a wide spectrum of communications and marketing activities, always with a creative eye; a strong sense of people, process and politics; and a can-do attitude leavened with humour.

Kristine re-created Memorial’s student viewbook, developed a new campus-wide theme – “Going Further? – and co-directed a major new television advertising campaign. The result was an award-winning ad that has run on national television, and an increase in Memorial’s student enrolment. University Relations and Student Recruitment staff at Memorial count on her solid media relations advice, her zeal for quality and her strong sense of teamwork.

Bridget McMahon
Development Officer, President’s Office, Wilfrid Laurier University

The President of Wlifrid Laurier University, Robert Rosehart, has high praise for Bridget McMahon, whom he terms “a very capable fund raiser and a great ambassador? for the institution. Bridget’s role in the President’s Office encompasses challenging development projects, volunteer management, special events and strategic planning.

Bridget was previously a Senior Liaison Officer in Laurier’s undergraduate recruitment office, where she managed all aspects of the on-campus tour program, providing leadership to 25 student ambassadors and two student coordinators. In addition to revamping the entire campus tour process, she completely redesigned the university’s open houses and the Discover Laurier event for newly registered students.

In the President’s Office, Bridget’s multi-faceted portfolio has honed her latent skills in development and project management. She coordinates Laurier’s Ontario Student Opportunity Trust Fund campaign, and thanks to her work, Laurier’s Family Campaign in 2004 raised $450,000 on a goal of $250,000. Her funding proposal to a foundation met with an increase in scholarship support from $25,000 per year to $210,000 overall, and she has organized special events for alumni and dignitaries. Says President Rosehart: “Her ability to deal with senior faculty, staff and volunteers and to work with confidential issues has been exemplary.?

Hélène Véronneau
Senior Development Advisor, Université de Montréal

In the scope of just a few years, Hélène Véronneau has achieved results in major gift fund raising that her veteran colleagues might envy. Within less than three years of starting her career in Development, she obtained the largest individual gift ever donated to a francophone institution: $12.5 million.

The sector of major individual gifts at francophone institutions is still in its early growth, and Hélène’s contribution in this regard has been spectacular. She very quickly mastered the principles of the profession and proved herself to be an expert of the very highest caliber in major gifts. She also was a key player in the attainment of nearly $10 million in corporate donations.

As a Development Advisor in the Faculty of Pharmacy at the Université de Montréal during the capital campaign “A World of Projects,? Hélène coordinated a faculty campaign that brought in $23 million, although its objective had been only $4 million.

An indefatigable and determined worker, Hélène launched her career in the super-charged context of a major campaign that proved to be an unprecedented success for a francophone institution, raising some $218 million on a goal of $125 million. She is known for her strong leadership qualities among her colleagues, who respect both her capabilities and her generosity.
